En 1967, elle accompagne aux Etats-Unis son mari Jacques Demy. Tombée amoureuse de Los Angeles, elle fréquente Andy Warhol et Jim Morrison, y tourne une fiction hippie <i>(Lions love</i>), un docu sur les peintures murales, part à la rencontre de ses voisins (<i>Daguerréotypes</i> en 1978), s'inspire d'une photo (<i>Ulysse</i>), de Jane Birkin (Jane B. par Agnès V.).<br />Adepte du coq-à-l'âne, du collage et du calembour, Agnès Varda se fait aussi le témoin de son époque : les luttes féministes dans<i> L'Une chante, l'autre pas,</i> la condition de ceux qu'on ne nomme pas encore SDF dans <i>Sans toit ni loi</i> avec Sandrine Bonnaire ; le film remporte le Lion d'or à Venise et un beau succès en salles en 1985. Plus tard, avec <i>Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse,</i> la cinéaste pointe, à sa manière, les excès de la société de consommation.<br />Avec son talent de conteuse, son insatiable curiosité et son éternelles coupe au bol, Varda a su se faire, au fil des ans, une place à part dans le cinéma français, au point de se voir confier le redoutable honneur de tourner le film-hommage au 7e art centenaire (<i>Les Cent et une nuits</i>). Sur un mode plus intime, elle consacre 3 films précis et précieux (dont <i>Jacquot de Nantes</i> en 1991) au défunt Jacques Demy. Auréolée d'un César d'honneur pour l'ensemble de sa carrière en 2001, elle s'essaie ensuite à l'art contemporain à travers expositions et installations.
