Deborah Stratman déploie un champ allégorique et méditatif en partant de courts récits se déroulant dans l’état de l’Illinois entre l’an 600 - soit bien avant la « naissance d’une nation »
- et 1985. Une traversée de l’histoire par la trace (ou son absence) dans le paysage et par des images d’archives.  

Faithful to the title of her film, Deborah Stratman sets up an allegorical and meditative field by narrating shorts stories set in the State of Illinois between the year 600 - namely far before the ‘birth of the nation’ - and 1985. This crossing over history occurs by way of the trace (or its absence) in the landscape, but also through archival images.

Artiste pluridisciplinaire œuvrant dans la sculpture, la photographie et la création sonore, Deborah Stratman, basée à Chicago, a réalisé depuis 1995 un nombre important de documentaires expérimentaux parmi lesquels In Order Not to be Here (2002) ou O’er the Land (2009). Son travail qui souvent interroge l’espace américain et son rapport à l’histoire a été présenté aussi bien au MOMA, au centre Georges Pompidou qu’aux festivals de Rotterdam, Toronto ou Oberhausen. 

Multidisciplinary artist working in sculpture, photography and sound creation, Deborah Stratman, based in Chicago, has since 1995 conceived numerous experimental documentaries including In Order Not to be Here (2002) and O’er the Land (2009). Her work, which often questions American space and its relation to history, has been presented at the MOMA, at the Georges Pompidou Centre and at Rotterdam, Toronto and Oberhausen festivals.
