Gulyabani est une entité, un vampire, une étrangère. Elle est l’esprit tourmenté d’un paysage désolé et déserté. Fethiye Sessiz, voyante renommée d’Izmir dans les années 1970-1980, a des réminiscences de l’époque où elle a survécu aux mauvais traitements, aux enlèvements et à la violence. Racontant les événements de son enfance à travers son journal et des lettres adressées à son fils, dont elle était séparée, Gulyabani se remémore les paysages émotionnels de la plus violente période de la Turquie post-républicaine, où la mémoire de l’avenir et les fragments du passé surgissent ensemble subitement.

Gulyabani is an entity, a ghoul, an outsider: She’s the restless spirit of desolate and lonely place. Fethiye Sessiz, a notorious clairvoyant of Izmir in 70’s and 80’s, remembers fractions of her survival from abuse, kidnappings and violence. Recounting the events of her childhood through her diary entries and letters to her estranged son, Gulyabani recollects the emotional landscape in the most violent period of post- Republic Turkey, where the memory of the future and fragments of the past come together at once.

Gürcan Keltek

Né à Izmir (Turquie), Gürcan Keltek a étudié le cinéma à la Dokuz Eylül University avant de réaliser plusieurs courts métrages, parmi lesquels Fazlamesai (2012), sélectionné à Visions du réel. Son moyen métrage Koloni (2015) a été présenté au FIDMarseille ; Meteorlar (2017), son premier long métrage (dont la première mondiale a eu lieu au Festival de Locarno), a été sélectionné dans de nombreux festivals, dont Rotterdam, BAFICI, Viennale, Bordeaux, Fajr, Hong Kong et the Art of the Real. Gulyabani (2018) a été projeté en première mondiale au Festival de Locarno et sélectionné au Tate Modern, Reykjavik, Rotterdam et Viennale.

Born in Izmir, Gürcan Keltek studied film at Dokuz Eylül University before directing several shorts including Overtime (2012), screened at Visions Du Réel. His medium-length film Colony (2015) was screened at FIDMarseille. His first feature film Meteorlar (2017) won more than twenty awards including First Feature Film Award and Boccolino d’Oro Film Critics’ Award at Locarno Film Festival. It was screened at many international film festivals including Rotterdam, BAFICI, Viennale, Bordeaux, Fajr, Hong Kong and the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Art of the Real. Gulyabani (2018) premiered at Signs of Life of Locarno Festival and was screened at Tate Modern, Reykjavik, Rotterdam and Viennale.
